THE BENEFITS OF PHOTOPERIOD

Photoperiod with Led technology is an integral key factor to develop and implement strategies, not only meant for production, it can also be implemented for sanitary strategies as well. Using artificial light to induce systems of artificial photoperiods, we can increase growth rates, control smoltification, handle reproduction and reduce the influence of early maturity.

Retina

The eye, specifically the retina, is the organ in charge of receiving light, which goes through changes in order to be able to adapt to different environments during its life.  There are many different photic (light) conditions present in aquatic ecosystems that might generate multiple adaptations responding to the environmental requirements in physical, as well as biological factors.

The retina can capture length waves between 360 and 620 (nm) nanometres.

The Pineal gland is an organ that receives light, perceiving photoperiodic length waves, reaching an optimal length of 500nm. This gland turns light fluctuations into making a distinction between day light and nocturnal light, being a mayor influence for the biological process of fish, such as maturity.

Photoperiod is the most important environmental factor, which virtually determines the coordination of all physiological, as well as behaviour functions during smolt development. Dimming the intensity of light inside the pre-smolt fish ponds can give us the wrong environmental queues of a winter period, which, as a consequence, can influence early maturity in smolt stock.

Length wave and light intensity are very strong influences on a series of biological processes, which are currently used for salmon fattening periods.

It is known that supressing sexual maturity before harvest season is a priority in the salmon farming industry, and it can be achieved through photoperiodic handling of the stock using permanent artificial light, carried out between winter solstice and summer solstice, during the second year of the farming stage.

We specialise in designing and manufacturing power distribution boards, control boards, TDA&F, TG, TTA, charge distribution units (CDC) and PLC. We give our customers trustworthy and quality work.

We give our customers the possibility to rent our products for a determined amount of time, as well as giving technical assistance during this period.

Photometry consists of measuring the luminous intensity in lux units (lumen/m2). Depending on the objective of the measurement, such as obtaining a better growth rate or avoid maturity, lux levels or luminous intensity varies. A minimum of 5 lux is sufficient to avoid maturity, and in the case of projecting a better growth rate, a light with a minimum of 10 lux or more is required to be located at any part of the fish cage.
